Hip Replacement Surgery to 101 year old woman

Successful Hip Replacement Surgery give a second life to a a 101 year old woman from Panipat, who had a fall at her home. After that she was suffering form severe pain in left hip but kept on limping for few days but on fifth day the pain became worse and she couldn’t move at all. Her family never thought she would be active again. But doctors at a city based Hospital gave them hope and successfully operated on her with the help of MIS technique. The result: 101 year old lady was back on her feet. This medical feat was one of the rare events in the medical field.

Patient’s family contacted Dr. Ashwani Maichand & team of Institute of Bone & Joint (MGS) Hospital, NewDelhi. X-Ray of the hip showed fracture neck of femur left side. She was also suffering from hypertension and her kidney function was not upto the mark as expected in this age.The family was very anxious about the surgical procedure but Doctors convinced them that early mobility of the patient is must for the complete recovery at this age. Hence, surgery was must but screw fixation was out as it requires 3 months of bed rest. All specialists from cardiology, nephrology and anaesthesia were involved so as to optimize the patient for surgery. Once everyone was satisfied, cemented hip replacement was done by MIS technique.

No blood transfusion was required, patient was never shifted to ICU and she started walking from day 1 with walker but without any pain. (Read More on Page – 2)
